Voicing of Labiovelar Stops in Yoruba

چکیده
This production study investigates the correlates of voicing in initial /b, k, , b, kp/ stops in Yoruba. We found “voiceless” /kp/ to be “partially voiced”. It has prevoicing, but at the same time it behaves like a typical voiceless stop in raising the f0 of the following vowel, and in having the tendency to decrease surrounding vowel durations. /kp/ and /b/ are furthermore distinguished from each other with respect to the duration of prevoicing. The single stops /k/ and //, on the other hand, differ not only with respect to voice onset time, f0 and vowel duration, but also with respect to the complete absence or presence of prevoicing. We furthermore focus on looking for voicing enhancement mechanisms in the stop voicing system. Preliminary analysis of EGG data and the intensity during the prevoicing seems to suggest that for voiced labiovelar stops, there might be a voicing enhancement mechanism that is stronger than in the case of voiced single stops.

Voicing in Russian Stops: Cross-linguistic implications
This paper presents the results of an investigation of voicing in utterance-initial and intervocalic stops in monolingual Russian speakers. Prevoicing was found in over 97% of the lenis stops; over 97% of the intervocalic stops were fully voiced. Utterance-initial fortis stops were pronounced as voiceless unaspirated and had short positive VOT. Intervocalic fortis stops were completely voiceles...
متن کاملAcoustic evidence of articulatory adjustments to sustain voicing during voiced stops
The present study seeks to provide acoustic evidence of articulatory adjustments to initiate and sustain voicing during stops. First, using aerodynamic and acoustic data, it examines variations in the amplitude of voicing in phraseinitial voiced stops in Spanish and English and relates these variations to articulatory adjustments to preserve a low oral pressure and voicing. Second, a correlatio...
متن کاملOral Cavity Enlargement in Retroflex Stops
It is generally recognized that front-articulated stops are more compatible with voicing than backarticulated stops because the larger oral volume and compliance of front stops allows for longer trans-glottal airflow. Phonological patterns suggest that retroflex stops may be an exception to this pattern and may be more compatible with voicing than their dental/alveolar counterparts. An experime...
متن کاملSpeaker Specific Strategies of Voicing, Devoicing and Glottalisation in German Stops
This paper reports the results from an instrumental investigation into speaker specific strategies of stop voicing, devoicing and glottalisation in German. Laryngograph recordings were taken from eight German speakers producing /p, t, k/ and /b, d, ɡ/ preceded by vowels, nasals or /l/ and followed by nasals or /l/. Four of the subjects produced glottalised stops in some phonetic environments, t...
متن کاملPerception of VOT and First Formant Onset by Spanish and English Speakers
Many languages exhibit a voicing distinction with two series of stops, voiced and voiceless, which differ primarily in the relative timing between the consonantal release and the onset of laryngeal vibration, known as voice onset time (VOT) (Lisker and Abramson, 1964). While the exact implementation of VOT for the voicing contrast differs among languages, long lag VOTs, with a long delay betwee...
